Description
Summary:Rhetorical criticism has greatly influenced Pauline studies over the last few decades, and most interpreters assume that at least some knowledge of ancient rhetoric is helpful for the study of Paul. Nothing close to this reality is true for interpretation of the Gospels, in spite of a few important articles/chapters, and even fewer monographs. Because much ancient literature operated under the influence of rhetoric, however, the comparative neglect of rhetoric by Gospels scholars is regrettable. Stube's rhetorical reading of the Johannine Farewell Discourse (John 13–17) is, therefore, a welcome contribution to Johannine studies. The book has several related goals.
