Description
Summary:Reformation Sources is divided into three quite distinct parts. The first, ‘Historical Context’, consists of three essays considering the career and context of Wolfgang Capito. James S. Hirstein considers Capito's growing involvement in the Froben press during his time in Basel (1515–20); unfortunately, Hirstein's discussion gives little sense of the Basel context during the period. Capito's time in Strassburg is considered in more detail. Erika Rummer offers a fascinating insight into the politics of clerical appointments and the complexities of Reformation allegiances, tracing Capito's fight to secure the post of Provost of St Thomas, Strassburg, and his attempts to convince both Lutherans and Catholics—he was in the service of the Archbishop of Mainz from 1520—of his allegiance.
