Description
Summary:This addition to the burgeoning Oxford Early Christian Studies series presents a careful reading and translation of Basil's monastic legislation. Silvas offers this, in admirably unabashed fashion, as a contribution towards a recovery, ‘or even reinvention’, of Christian monasticism—the decline or loss of which she sees as a major factor in the contemporary ‘crisis of Christianity’. The book consists of a detailed discussion of the textual tradition, ascetic background, historical context, and geographical setting of the material, followed by a translation of the Great Asketikon itself (i.e. Basil's Shorter and Longer Rules in their expanded form of the late 360s and 370s).
