Summary: | This is a big book about a small number of fragments of an ancient writer. In fact, it is the biggest, most thorough, and undoubtedly the best study so far of the fragments of Papias of Hierapolis. Hitherto the fullest edition of Papias fragments was that by Reinhard M. Hübner, with German translation by Josef Kürzinger, in J. Kürzinger, Papias von Hierapolis und die Evangelien des Neuen Testaments (Regensburg: Pustet, 1983), pp. 93–137, containing 25 fragments. Norelli has 26, but, because of the way the fragments are numbered, there are in fact six texts additional to those presented by Hübner and Kürzinger. In each case the text (in Greek, Latin, Arabic, or Armenian) is taken from the best published edition and provided with an Italian translation in parallel. |
