Summary: | The first of these two essays on ‘the underestimated Peter’ is a revised version of a lecture the author gave at a joint meeting of the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum and the Melanchthon centre in Rome in November 2005. The other is an updated and much expanded version of an article that originally appeared in the INTAMS review in 1997. In ‘Peter the Rock, Paul, and the Gospel Tradition’ (pp. 1–166), Hengel opens a perspective towards a ‘reassessment’ of Peter, his character and role in the early Church, and raises a critical voice on the way the tensions between Peter and Paul, in his view, have all too often been smoothed out. |
