Description
Summary:Since 1999 there have already been five major commentaries in English on the Pastorals (by I. H. Marshall, W. D. Mounce, J. D. Quinn and W. C. Wacker, L. T. Johnson, and R. F. Collins). Philip Towner himself has written a more popular commentary (1994), and cooperated in the writing of Marshall's ICC commentary. And yet this fine commentary justifies its place alongside them. Among its special characteristics are the following., First, there is close attention to the political, social, and cultural context of the Pastorals, drawing on evidence from Ephesus and Crete which, though its significance is sometimes ambiguous, may help to explain some of the distinctive features of these letters.
