Description
Summary:In this revision of her doctoral dissertation, Michelle V. Lee analyses the content and function of the ‘body’ language which Paul employs in 1 Corinthians 12 within the context of Hellenistic moral philosophy, Stoic in particular. Lee attempts to show—and well succeeds in showing—that Stoicism provides the means for understanding Paul's concept of bodily unity, including how the concept affects his ethics., The study falls into two main parts, preceded by an introductory chapter with methodological considerations, history of research, etc. (ch. 1). Each main part is divided into three chapters. In Part I (‘Background: The Stoics, Body, and Ethics’) Lee first examines the general Hellenistic philosophical background of the body metaphor, Stoic as well as non-Stoic (ch. 2).
