Description
Summary:The title of this book may raise unfulfilled expectations for some readers. It is neither about ‘Q’ (at least directly) nor the ‘Secret Gospel of Mark’ (as normally understood today). Rather, it is about the Gospel of Mark as found in the New Testament, the main thesis of this study being that Mark's Gospel in its present form represents a number of different stages in its growth, all the work of the same Mark the evangelist. An initial chapter examines the patristic evidence about Mark's Gospel: much of it is contradictory if taken as referring to a single text; however, Humphrey claims that it can all be reconciled once one accepts that the Gospel may have grown in stages and different witnesses are referring to different stages in that growth.
