Summary:As is well known, the Masoretic text of 1 and 2 Samuel is beset with more than its fair share of textual problems. It is difficult to overstate the importance of the evidence of the three scrolls of the Hebrew text of 1–2 Samuel from Qumran Cave 4 published here in their entirety. A fourth manuscript of the Books of Samuel from Cave 1 (1Q7) was published by D. Barthélemy in DJD 1 (Qumran Cave 1, ed. D. Barthélemy and J. T. Milk [Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1955], pp. 64–5)., The official editions presented here fall into four parts of unequal length.
