The work is divided into three main parts. The first part begins with a detailed review of the major sources upon which the investigation is based—1 and 2 Maccabees, Josephus’ Jewish War, Antiquities XII–XIV, and Against Apion, Hecataeus of Abdera, the Letter of Aristeas, Sirach, and the book of Daniel.
