Summary: | This volume is a revised version of the author's 2004 doctoral thesis from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, which in its own words ‘attempts to establish whether there was a development or rather a decline in the Jewish institution of the high priesthood, during a period strongly influenced by Greek culture’ (p. xii). The work is divided into three main parts. The first part begins with a detailed review of the major sources upon which the investigation is based—1 and 2 Maccabees, Josephus’ Jewish War, Antiquities XII–XIV, and Against Apion, Hecataeus of Abdera, the Letter of Aristeas, Sirach, and the book of Daniel. |
