Summary: | This unusual book seeks to reintroduce something of the kind of theological and philosophical reflection on the Bible that characterized the great pre-modern theologians. However, MacDonald is clear that this must be done in a way that fully recognizes and learns from the insights of modern biblical criticism, which will necessarily make a difference to the way that the large conceptual issues are formulated and developed. MacDonald's overall approach is deeply indebted to Barth. Drawing on the early (Barth-influenced) von Rad, MacDonald's initial concern is how to construe God as creator in Genesis 1, given that Israel came to understand God as creator subsequent to coming to know God through the historical experience of the Exodus. |
