Description
Summary:Freedom and Necessity is, surprisingly, Gerald Bonner's first new book on Augustine since his justly celebrated St Augustine of Hippo: Life and Controversies, which was first published 44 years ago. It addresses at greater length an area of Augustinian studies which has been the subject of some of his best-known articles and lectures in the intervening years. Notwithstanding the impression which might be gained from the title, it is not a philosophical book. Nor is it, strictly, a history of the development of Augustine's views on freedom and grace or of the Pelagian controversy. In fact, despite a logically sequential series of chapter titles, its structuring principles are a little difficult to discern and it contains a good deal of repetition.
