Two weeks later, on the second Sunday after the Feast of the Epiphany, he returned to the theme when speaking about the plight of refugees and migrants. It seems clear that he is determined to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who declared in 1995 that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was ‘one of the highest expressions of the conscience of our time’. These are only three, very public, instances of the increasing attention that is being given to the question of human rights in Christian thought today.
