Description
Résumé:There are at least six types of transformations that Christians say take place when engaging with the Bible. By reading the Bible a person is said to be able to: encounter Christ; encounter God; hear God speak; gain new perspectives; access magical powers; or bring about social change. This paper draws on research that brought together a focus group of ordinary Catholics who did not normally use the Bible outside of Mass but spent a year engaging with it. These participants found that reading the Bible was transformative in two main ways. First, they became more interested in the Bible. Second, they gained a new appreciation of some aspect of their faith and this positively impacted them. These two findings are connected and correspond with the claims that engaging with the Bible potentially results in the user gaining a new perspective which is spiritually nourishing [Schneiders, 1991; Schipani, 2015, 99-116].
