520 |a Dom Columba Joseph Marmion, OSB was undoubtedly one of the great spiritual authors of the twentieth century. He was born in Dublin in 1858 and ordained to the priesthood 1881. After five years of ministry as a diocesan priest and seminary professor, he was granted permission to enter Maredsous Abbey in Belgium, taking Columba as his religious name. In 1909 he was elected as Maredsous's third abbot, and continued to act as a much sought-after confessor, spiritual director, and retreat master until his death in 1923. His writings originated from the notes he composed for spiritual conferences to his monks, clergy, and religious, and from notes made by the participants.
