Summary: | With these two magisterial volumes, completing the Anglican letters and diaries, the mammoth undertaking of editing, annotating, and contextualizing Newman's massive correspondence comes almost to an end. The project having been begun by that doyen of Newman scholars, the late Fr Stephen Dessain, who started with the Catholic letters, all that remains to be published is a volume of supplementary letters which have come to light in the course of the sequential publication, and a volume which will provide a general index to the whole series., Volume 9 was begun by the late Gerard Tracey, whose sudden and unexpected death robbed the enterprise of an editor of meticulous accuracy and considerable learning. |
