Description
Summary:The proceedings of the 2001 Carranza Symposium held at Christ Church, Oxford, set out to ‘discuss Carranza's activities and achievements in England, and to place them in the religious and political context of Mary Tudor's joint reign with Philip of Spain’ (p. xi). While the work certainly extends our understanding of the brief reign of Mary Tudor, it does not entirely succeed in its aim of integrating these insights with the contributions of Fray Bartolomé Carranza de Miranda, OP to the mid-sixteenth-century theological debate., John Edwards's introduction to the work tells the story of Carranza's life with verve (pp. 1–20). Born in Navarre at the beginning of the sixteenth century, Carranza was educated at Alcalá de Henares and Valladolid.
