| Summary: | This collection of essays begins with the transcription of a seventeenth-century Italian journal from the charterhouse of Bologna, written on thirty folios and edited by Piergiorgio Rocchi. The author was Dom Lorenzo Lucchini, prior of the charterhouse and visitor of the province of Tuscany. He provides a fascinating eyewitness account of his community during the terrible plague of 1630. The journal shows throughout Lucchini's concern to protect the monks from the contagion. Lucchini was also troubled with safeguarding observance within the enclosure, but was not indifferent to the sufferings of the citizens of Bologna. |
