Summary: | Here is a thorough and useful edition of two important works. Tertullian's is the only surviving patristic work dedicated to the matter of baptism, and his work on prayer contains the earliest surviving commentary upon the Lord's Prayer. The text of De baptismo was established by J. W. P. Borleffs in the first volume of Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina in 1954, and that of De oratione in the same volume by G. F. Diercks. Schleyer reprints these texts with no critical apparatus. He does, however, alter the text at ten points in De baptismo and seven in De oratione (though a couple of these are merely changes of punctuation and interpretation). All these deviations are listed and presented on pp. 155–7, and are further discussed in the annotations. A special Anhang on pp. |
