Summary: | It is sometimes alleged that our New Testament is simply an arbitrary selection made by the Church from a much larger collection of literature that might equally well have been included. The best answer, as M. R. James suggested more than eighty years ago, is to ask the speaker if he or she has ever read any of that literature: ‘there is no question of any one's having excluded them from the New Testament: they have done that for themselves’ (The Apocryphal New Testament [Oxford, 1924], pp. xi–xii). |
