Summary:The theme of the Son's kenosis has been a pivotal one within the christological debates since their inception. One need only look at the Nestorian controversy to see both Nestorius and Cyril employing the Philippians hymn in order to support their respective stances. Despite such prominence in the early church and in subsequent debates, the notion has been plagued by ambiguity at a number of levels.
