| Summary: | This volume consists of several diverse notes and studies on Carthusian topics. In the first of four contributions, James Hogg provides a brief notice and bibliography on the life of Dom Firmin Le Ver (c.1370–1444), monk and prior of the Charterhouse of Abbeville. He is noteworthy as the author of a Latin/French dictionary, containing 540,000 words, the first printed edition of which appeared as late as 1994. Unfortunately, the influx of scholarly visitors to Abbeville was frowned upon by the general chapter, indicating the tensions which can result from scholarly pursuits among the Carthusians., This is followed by a useful historical survey by Hogg of the Carthusian order from its origins to the present day (pp. |
