Description
Summary:In the century after Bede's death, the text of his major historical work, Ecclesiastical History of the English People, circulated more widely in Europe than in England. Bede was venerated as a major commentator on Scripture, and his account of the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons and the establishment of the Church among them was read more for its connection with his biblical works than for its historical interest. In modern times, this has been reversed and the Ecclesiastical History of the English People has become in the English-speaking world one of the best known of all early accounts of the English nation in its own right, with a corresponding lack of interest in the biblical commentaries.
