Summary: | This study of Paul's ethics by David Horrell, of the University of Exeter, is notable not just for its admirably well-argued and lucid treatment of the subject but for two features of the method he uses to organize the material. First, he argues for two overriding ‘metanorms’ which allow Paul both to assess and to inspire the ethical conduct of Christians and to make room for legitimate differences of Christian practice; secondly, he places the whole discussion in the framework of the contemporary ethical debate between ‘communitarians’ and ‘liberals’, selecting Stanley Hauerwas and Jürgen Habermas as their key representatives. |
