Summary: | The prophetic oracles against foreign nations have proved to be among the more complex and difficult parts of the Hebrew Bible to provide with a satisfactory interpretative context. The modern reader appears to lack the necessary hermeneutical key with which to unlock the message they conveyed to an ancient reader. In part this is evidently a consequence of the uncongenial nature of the content of these passages, which sets them apart from the more easily intelligible prophetic invective directed against Israel and Judah, where the condemnation of religious and moral offences gives a comforting assurance to the modem reader. |
