| Summary: | The notoriously difficult and possibly corrupt verses 1 John 3:18–22 have given rise over the centuries to various conjectures and differing interpretations. Angelo Scarano, who now has a teaching position in theology at the Charles University in Prague, defends the unity of these verses. His monograph sets out clearly the history of interpretation from patristic times (with Augustine, Tertullian, and Bede) through to modern times. Modern commentaries have been consulted. (Wrede is misspelled.) The historical sweep includes the dividing of those exegetes who give a negative interpretation from those reading a ‘positive’ theological message from the verses. |
