Description
Summary:Robert Kolb traces the history of Lutheran debate on ‘bound choice’ and election up to the 1580 Formula of Concord in impressive detail. As these issues are impossible to detach from a variety of others—predestination, necessity, responsibility for sin, God hidden and revealed, the inward and outward call of God—the argument is difficult to contain. In tracing the various stages of the debate he plots the influence of Luther's 1525 tract against Erasmus, De Servo Arbitrio. But he has another stated aim: to discover what an examination of the debate and the way it was conducted may reveal about the distinctive theological method being employed in the ‘Wittenberg Circle’.
