Description
Summary:Gregory the Great's homilies on the Gospels have always been best-sellers. R. Étaix, on whose remarkable edition (CCSL 141) this first volume for Sources Chrétiennes is based, knew of around 450 manuscripts (complete or fragmentary), no fewer than 27 of them dating to the eighth century. Bruno Judic in his excellent introduction tells us (pp. 85, 87) that they were translated early into the vernacular languages (English, French, Italian). And three other translations have been published since 1990. Judic says very properly of Charles Morel (now, like Étaix, deceased) that his version shows ‘les qualités de justesse et de finesse’. This fine volume is an ornament to a series to which, as to its increasingly close sibling the Corpus Christianorum, theologians and Latinists owe so much.
