Description
Summary:It has been said that, in modern times, the French are the most devoted disciples of the Bishop of Hippo and this book adds weight to the assertion. With 489 pages of text, a bibliography of 41 pages, and five indexes (biblical, Augustinian, authors, onomastic, and analytic), together with two lists within the text, one (pp. 49–151) of scriptural references to justice included by Augustine in The City of God and the other (pp. 253–302) of the relation of the roots ‘-iust-[itia]’ and ‘virt-[us]’ (in a discussion of how the word virtus developed in meaning from a physical to a moral quality, which was ascribed to the notion of iustitia, together with the other three cardinal virtues), the study is, like its subject, a magnum opus et arduum.
