Summary: | The biggest revolution in Pauline studies this century is, arguably, the ‘new perspective’ on his soteriology. This volume, the bulk of which is a collection of published essays on the topic with a final unpublished essay, has been transformed into a history of the whole debate by the addition of an 88-page introductory first chapter which both traces the debate and sums up Dunn's own conclusions. Dunn tells us how E. P. Sanders's seminal work (Paul and Palestinian Judaism: A Comparison of Patterns of Religion [London: SCM Press, 1977]) presented a new perspective on first-century Jewish soteriology as ‘covenantal nomism’. |
