Summary: | It is hardly in doubt that Jesus ‘used’ Scripture (though ‘reads’, as in the main title of this book, gives a misleading impression to modern ears). The testimony of all the gospels, along with our knowledge of what was to be expected of any comparable religious figure of his time and place, makes it barely conceivable that he would have spoken and acted without constant reference to the Hebrew Scriptures. But how far this ‘use’ by Jesus is recoverable, and whether what we read in the gospels is partly or entirely the Christian ‘hermeneutic’ of the evangelists transposed into the circumstances of Jesus’ life and ministry, are questions on which there is little agreement. |
