A major aspect of the crisis resulted from the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple and the execution or dispersal of its personnel, presented in the historical record as a distinct and deliberate act (2 Kings 25) motivated by the fact that the Temple and its priesthood, as an important part of the state apparatus, had provided the religious legitimation for the revolt.
