Summary: | The roughly half a century between the liquidation of the Judaean state by the Babylonians in 586 bc and the liquidation of the Babylonian empire by the Persians in 539 bc is recognized as the watershed in the history of Israel and as a time of unparalleled religious crisis. A major aspect of the crisis resulted from the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple and the execution or dispersal of its personnel, presented in the historical record as a distinct and deliberate act (2 Kings 25) motivated by the fact that the Temple and its priesthood, as an important part of the state apparatus, had provided the religious legitimation for the revolt. |
