Description
Summary:The charterhouse of Bereza was founded in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1648 by Kasimir-Leo Sapieha, vice-chancellor of Lithuania, and in 1651 it was officially incorporated in the Carthusian order. In 1831 it was suppressed by Czar Nicolas I after the Polish insurrection of November 1830. By this time the monastic library consisted of more than 2,300 volumes. Although they were dispersed, an inventory had been completed in 1820 in connection with a visitation of the charterhouse; it is printed in full as an appendix to this careful monograph, which offers a detailed and informative survey of the library in the almost two hundred years of the charterhouse's existence. Bereza's library consisted preponderantly of mystical, ascetic, and moral theology; there were very few medieval items.
