Description
Summary:What is ‘public theology’? As the editors of this volume of 24 essays concede, the term is problematical. It implies that Christian theological thinking, which is an explication and application of principles and beliefs held specifically by Christians, has relevance to people who do not hold these principles and beliefs, and can claim space to be heard in places where issues of public concern are discussed and decided. This claim, which has been advanced and contested down the centuries, appears to have become particularly vulnerable in the face of ‘liberal’ conceptions of society, in which the beliefs of individuals and groups are encouraged to flourish only so long as they do not seek to argue for a truth superior to that of others.
