Description
Summary:Beth Kreitzer sets out to chart the impact of sixteenth-century Lutheran theology on the powerful medieval inheritance of Marian doctrine and piety. Her method is at first sight a surprising one. She chooses not to analyse the Lutheran treatment of Mary topic by topic (for instance: immaculate conception, perpetual virginity, sinlessness, assumption, Mary as co-redemptrix); nor does she examine Lutheran leaders and preachers one by one, or even school by school. She gives a useful overview of the scholarship, but on the whole her book does not engage in debate with other commentators.
