Description
Summary:‘To Heloise, once dear in the world, now most dear in Christ’ (p. 4): it is a rare lover who sends his beloved a commentary he has written for her on the Book of Genesis, and even more rare is the woman who would ask that of her former lover. In the mid-1130s, after Heloise and her nuns had settled at the Paraclete, Peter Abelard composed for them a commentary which would explain Augustine's classic work De Genesi ad Litteram. Heloise had asked for this and so Abelard composed a literal, grammatical exposition of the text of the Hexameron. This was very much in line with Heloise's scholarly interests; her earlier letter asking Abelard to find for her a Psalter was for a more accurate text, not for a more spiritual exposition.
