Description
Summary:The so-called ‘Sacramentary of Ratoldus’ is one of the most complex liturgical texts of the late Carolingian era, as Nicholas Orchard's excellent edition demonstrates. Written at the behest of Ratoldus, Abbot of Corbie 972–98, probably for a northern French bishop, the manuscript itself has had a complex life as well. Ending up in the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris after the French Revolution, it has been the object of numerous studies in the period since, and successive attempts in the last fifty years at a critical edition, starting with the late Dom Louis Brou, OSB, of Quarr Abbey. This particular manuscript is that rare breed, a Sacramentary–Pontifical.
