Description
Summary:This Paderborn doctoral thesis was directed by Knut Backhaus and accepted in June 2003. It is clearly structured, fully documented, well argued, and concisely expressed. Lewicki constantly cites other scholars, usually in support of his statements, less commonly in disagreement (notably with M. Bachmann, pp. 53–6). The body of the material is arranged in four chapters of increasing length, following an introductory outline (pp. 11–12), and preceding a concluding ‘Rückblick und theologische Zusammenfassung’ (pp. 141–4)., Chapter 1 (pp. 13–22) examines the readers’ situation. Lewicki believes them to be third-generation Christians, but does not draw any conclusions from this for the date of Hebrews. Their faith crisis arises more from an inner sickness than from outside pressure.
