Description
Summary:This Festschrift, honouring the seventy-fifth birthday of the distinguished Belgian authority on Carthusian history and spirituality, Jan De Grauwe, includes eleven papers on the subject. Only one addresses a medieval topic—a letter of Geert Grote (1340–84) commending to a perplexed Carthusian, Hendrik van Alkemade, his Order's way of life. Most of the remainder concern the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Of especial value to English-speaking historians is John Clark's transcription from Parkminster MS e l e of a hitherto unpublished English translation of the Passion and Martyrdom of the Holy English Carthusians first written in 1546 by Dom Maurice Chauncy (c.1509–81) for the prior of the charterhouse at Bruges.
