Summary: | The 13 papers in this volume were presented to a 1996 Paris colloquium held as part of an ecumenical project devoted to the study of Christian mission in Western culture (p. vii). The ‘West’ of the title is to be interpreted in this light rather than with reference to the Western Roman empire: Eastern writers feature alongside Western, though the only regional study (also the longest and most specialized paper) is about the evangelization of northern Italy in the fourth century. Other papers concern the relationship between charisma and office, women and Christianization, catechesis, changes to worship in the fourth century, heresy, and the development of Augustine's doctrine of baptism; there are other more general studies of conversion and the process of Christianization. |
