Summary: | With respect to its title, this book will both raise and disappoint expectations: raise them, because the juxtaposition of Bonhoeffer and nonviolence, particularly at the hands of a distinguished Christian ethicist such as Hauerwas, suggests a promising line of research; disappointing, because the book consists of a collection of essays of which only two relate to Bonhoeffer, only one (written with James Fodor) to ‘Performing the Faith’, and only one (apart from a few pages written in reponse to 9/11) to nonviolence. The connection which Hauerwas claims to see between these disparate pieces (at least one of which is reworked older material) remains elusive to the reader. |
