Summary: | What is a Pietist? This is the question rightly posed by Carter Lindberg at the start of his introductory essay in this, the latest in the Blackwell ‘Great Theologians’ series. Like so many terms in the repertoire of theological description, it is indeed slippery. The volume includes such figures as the English Puritan William Perkins and the French Roman Catholic Jeanne-Marie Guyon, alongside such standard figures as Paul Gerhardt and Philipp Spener, and it ends with John Wesley. This requires a somewhat wider interpretation of the term, as Lindberg tacitly admits, for what turns out to be some rich theological biography. I recall asking the same question about some of my Danish clerical forebears, one of whom studied theology at Halle in the 1760s. |
