Summary: | This clear-headed, critical, and highly wissenschaftlich book embodies the evolution of various studies on the topic over more than 25 years by Tony Lane. Moreover, it reflects what has been a definite growth area in Reformation studies throughout the last quarter of the twentieth century. This devotes increasing attention to the nature of the use of the Church Fathers in Reformation debates, and so the function of the ‘patristic testimony’ in non-controversial theology, polemical theology, and the interpretation of Scripture. Early impulses originated with survey studies by Pontien Polman and Jan Koopmans as far back as 1932 and 1938 respectively. The former is in French, and the latter remained locked in Dutch till 1955, when a German version was published. |
