Summary: | The latest volume in the Continuum series ‘Outstanding Christian Thinkers’, Erika Rummel's Erasmus, is itself outstanding. Finding context ‘of paramount importance in interpreting Erasmus's meaning’ (p. iv), she applies that emphasis in a brilliant consideration of her subject's massive contribution to the world of literature and learning, political thought, and, above all, piety. The approach is compelling, and all the more effective because the author's chronological modus operandi cleverly indicates both continuity of ideas and development of thought., Albeit a work of mature scholarship, the first chapter provides the best student introduction in English since Roland Bainton penned his Erasmus of Christendom (1970). |
