Description
Summary:The subject of this immensely learned and scholarly study has been known by the name of Gudiel only since the early sixteenth century, apparently owing to a misinterpretation of the arms on his Roman tomb in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. In his lifetime and after he was known as Gonzalo the son of Peter Juanes, thus as Gonzalo Pérez (or in Latin Gundisalvus Petri). None the less, as Gudiel he is likely always to be known. Not that he has hitherto been widely known, even by those concerned with thirteenth-century Spanish history; Hernández and Linehan justly complain about ‘the perfunctory treatment that the paltry and error-riddled entries in the historical dictionaries have accorded him’. There has been no major study of him.
