| Summary: | Siegfried Risse has here translated into German the critical text of Jerome's Commentary on Jonah of 396 prepared by Y.-M. Duval for Sources Chrétiennes (vol. 323; Paris, 1985), and has provided annotations, often in some detail, to both text and translation, which deal with individual points of linguistic, textual, and interpretational interest. It is his introduction, however, which furnishes the reader with the results of his researches into this remarkable work. This he begins with a brief biography of Jerome, in the course of which he draws attention to Jerome's visits to the catacombs and other subterranean Christian sites while he lived in Rome: there, he would undoubtedly have seen pictorial representations of Jonah and the ‘whale’. |
