Summary: | This book is a remarkably ambitious undertaking. As Ayres explains in the introduction, it has three aims. Although they are closely interrelated, the variety of approaches involved makes considerable demands on the reader over a broad range of historical and theological expertise. In the first instance the book offers a detailed historical survey of the fourth-century trinitarian controversies, along lines similar to Richard Hanson's The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God (1988), but taking full account of continuing research on the topic since Hanson's book appeared. It then sets out to expound the fundamental character of what Ayres calls the resultant ‘pro-Nicene’ theology (Eastern and Western) that emerges from the fourth-century controversies. |
