Summary: | The first volume of this work was noticed in JTS, ns 54 (2003), p. 469. The second volume, published as two books only for reasons of size, is based on the same principles and displays the same qualities of good style and theological perceptiveness that were noted there. But in this volume we come to the central area of the author's concern, an area where there are also far more historical and theological records demanding attention. This poses serious problems in the ordering and presentation of the material, which have not been altogether satisfactorily overcome., Early on, after some introductory sections, we are given a 60-page ‘Historical Overview’ of ‘Councils and Controversies’ between Nicaea and Constantinople. |
